About Jean Michel Basquiat

Jean-Michel Basquiat (JON MEECHEL BASCAT) was an influential African-American artist who emerged into the New York art scene in the 1980s. He is one of the most idolised artists of the 20th century and he has been credited with bringing African Americans and Latinos into the elite art market. His signature style included symbols and diagrams in the style of scribbling with mask and skull imagery. The paintings referenced political issues, pop-culture icons and his Caribbean heritage. After his death in 1988, interest in his artwork sky-rocketed, with his 1982 painting depicting a black skull with red and black rivulets (RIV-U-LITS) selling for 110.5 million dollars, setting a record for the price paid for an American Artist’s work. Today his works is some of the most sought after, so much so that when the estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat release a new limited edition print run onto the market these pieces are often snapped up and then often collectors will pay large premiums so that they can in some way own a relatively affordable piece by this elite Artist.
