Biography

Artist background

Growing up between Cuba and the Dominican Republic before relocating to Europe, CB Hoyo built his practice outside of traditional institutions. That independence matters: the work has its own tone, one that feels like an internal monologue pushed straight into public view.

His paintings and editions often use handwritten phrases, fake captions, blunt confessions and deadpan humour to question what makes art feel “real”, who gets to define value, and how taste is performed. The work is funny, but not light. It usually lands because there is something raw sitting underneath it.

Hoyo’s strongest pieces live in that tension between sincerity and parody. They can feel throwaway at first glance, then weirdly exact once you sit with them.
